Fibreglass or metal mosquito net mesh?
For most Abu Dhabi homes, fibreglass. It does not rust, it is the least visible from inside and it is the cheapest to replace, from 200 AED. Metal mesh is stiffer and harder to tear, but shows more from the room and near the sea it faces salt air. Choose metal only where strength matters more than the view.

What to choose near the sea
On the coast and the islands, salt settles on everything. Fibreglass does not corrode, which is why it is the default for sea-facing windows.
Rinse any mesh with fresh water now and then to wash the salt off.
Inland, away from salt, aluminium ages more slowly, so there the choice comes down to view against strength.
Metal is not for view windows
Metal is stronger, but by the sea it corrodes and it is more visible from the room. Keep it off panoramic windows.
How each mesh ages here
Sun is the main enemy of any fabric here. Fibreglass mesh is coated, and a good coating keeps it flexible; a cheap one turns brittle first on a sunny west window.
Aluminium stays stiff but dents where a child pushes it, and a dent does not go away. Stainless keeps its shape best of all.
What our clients say
The existing nets had holes from sun damage. They replaced them with UV-resistant mesh that should last much longer.
We wanted nets that wouldn't block the view too much. They installed very fine black mesh that's almost invisible from inside. Perfect.
The nets in the guest room were torn and looked messy. They replaced them with new fiberglass mesh and the room looks fresh again.
Mistakes when choosing mosquito net mesh
- Metal on a view window because it sounds stronger
- Standard fibreglass on a door where a dog jumps up
- New mesh in a bent frame: the gaps stay
- Never rinsing the mesh on a sea-facing balcony

Questions and answers
Is stainless mesh worth it in Abu Dhabi?
Only where strength matters, such as a door that takes knocks. Of the metals it copes best with salt air, but it is still more visible than fibreglass.
Does aluminium mesh rust?
It does not rust like steel, but salt air makes it oxidise and a white powdery bloom forms.
Is fibreglass strong enough for pets?
Standard fibreglass tears under claws. For a cat or a dog, choose the pet-resistant mesh, 800 AED per m².
Which mesh is least visible from inside?
Dark fibreglass. The eye looks through a dark, matt mesh more easily than through light or shiny metal.
