Mosquito net torn: replace the whole thing, or just the mesh?

Usually just the mesh. Under this sun the fibreglass fabric ages and tears, while the aluminium frame barely changes. If the frame is straight, the corners are tight and the screen still fits the opening, re-meshing from 200 AED brings it back. A new screen makes sense only when the frame itself is damaged.

Mosquito net torn: replace the whole thing, or just the mesh?

Why the fabric fails, not the frame

Ultraviolet light slowly makes the mesh coating brittle, and sand rubs it thin. Aluminium does not care about either.

Three checks for a torn mosquito net

01Is the frame straight?

Lay it on the floor. If it rocks or bows, it is bent.

02Are the corners tight?

Cracked or loose corner joints mean a new frame.

03Does it still fit?

If it sits without gaps and closes, the frame can take a new mesh.

What re-stretching actually involves

On a framed screen the old spline and mesh come out, new mesh is stretched evenly and pressed in with a new spline.

A pleated net is threaded on tension cords, so it is a job for a technician rather than a weekend project.

The cheapest moment to upgrade the mesh

The frame is being opened anyway, so this is when a different fabric costs least extra: pet-resistant for a cat, anti-dust for a windy side, anti-glare for a sunny room.

    Honest downside

    When you should not bother

If the frame is bent, the corners have cracked, or the opening has changed after renovation, re-meshing is money wasted. Then a new screen is the honest answer.

The existing nets had holes from sun damage. They replaced them with UV-resistant mesh that should last much longer.

We wanted nets that wouldn't block the view too much. They installed very fine black mesh that's almost invisible from inside. Perfect.

The nets in the guest room were torn and looked messy. They replaced them with new fiberglass mesh and the room looks fresh again.

    Questions and answers

    Can I re-mesh it myself?

A simple framed screen, yes, with a spline roller and patience. A pleated net is better left to a technician.

Do you re-mesh screens you did not install?

Send a photo first. If the frame is sound we can usually work with it, and we tell you before any work starts.

Send a photo of the tear

Send a photo of the screen and its corners on WhatsApp. We will say whether re-meshing will do and what it costs.
