Midges and sand flies: which mosquito net mesh stops them
Some midges and sand flies are small enough to crawl through a standard mosquito mesh, which is sized for mosquitoes. A finer weave with smaller holes stops more of them, at the cost of some airflow and view. It matters most near water and irrigated gardens. If only mosquitoes bother you, standard mesh is enough.

Why small biters get through
Our pleated mesh has a 0.8 × 0.8 mm cell. It is made for mosquitoes, and the smallest biting flies can squeeze through it.
A mosquito is too big for that cell and stays outside. Midges and sand flies are much smaller, so for some of them the same hole is an open door.
Standard or finer mosquito net mesh
| Compare | Standard mesh | Finer mesh |
|---|---|---|
| Mosquitoes | Stops them | Stops them |
| Smallest midges | Some get through | Far fewer get through |
| Airflow | Higher | Lower |
| View | Clearer | Slightly darker |
Where near the water it matters
Homes by lagoons, canals and mangroves, ground floors next to watered lawns and terraces used at dusk. Up on a high floor away from greenery, it rarely matters.
They come at dusk. If bites start at sunset on the terrace or by an open garden door, that door is the first place for a finer mesh.
Do not pay for what you lack
A fine cell cuts the breeze and darkens the view. If there are no midges where you live, do not pay for it.
Check what actually bites you
If you hear and see the insect, it is a mosquito and standard mesh will do. Bites from something you can barely see point to midges.
Bites in groups on ankles and wrists, with no buzzing heard, point to something smaller than a mosquito. Tell us where you sit and at what hour.
Mistakes with small biters
- A fine mesh on every window when only the terrace door lets them in
- Gaps at the frame edge: a midge finds a gap long before the mesh matters
- Bright lights by an open, unscreened door at dusk
- Expecting any mesh to stop every tiny insect

What our clients say
The existing nets had holes from sun damage. They replaced them with UV-resistant mesh that should last much longer.
We wanted nets that wouldn't block the view too much. They installed very fine black mesh that's almost invisible from inside. Perfect.
The nets in the guest room were torn and looked messy. They replaced them with new fiberglass mesh and the room looks fresh again.

Questions and answers
What mesh size stops midges?
The finer the cell, the more it stops, but no fabric stops every tiny insect. At the survey you look through samples and choose.
Are sand flies the same as midges?
No, they are different insects. For a screen the problem is the same: both are much smaller than a mosquito.
Do I need a finer mesh inland?
Usually not. Midges gather near water and watered gardens, so a dry spot inland rarely needs it. What is next to your house matters more than the district.
Will a finer mesh keep out dust too?
A denser weave holds back more fine dust as well. The anti-dust fabric is 800 AED per m² against 350 AED for standard, so compare both at the survey.
