Do mosquito nets really work?
Yes, when they close the opening completely. A mosquito cannot get through an intact mosquito mesh, so bites with screens fitted almost always mean a gap: at the frame edge, under the bottom track, through a tear, or a door left open. Close the gaps and the screen does its job.

Where mosquito nets let insects through
The mesh itself is rarely the problem. The weak points are around it.
- A gap between the frame and the wall
- A pleated net not pulled fully to the magnet
- A tear or a mesh pushed out of its spline
- An opening with no screen at all
- A door propped open for the evening

Step 1 of 5What opening is it for?
A bed net is a different job
A net over the bed protects one sleeper and only when it is tucked in. A screen on the window keeps insects out of the whole room.
Check your mosquito nets in five minutes
Any bright line along the frame is a gap.
It should click onto the magnet and stay.
Hold a torch behind it in the evening.
Which door stays open, and for how long.
What a screen cannot do
A screen will not help if the terrace door stays open all evening, and it will not remove the mosquitoes that are already inside.
What keeps a home free of bites
A screen on every opening you actually open, no gaps at the edges, torn mesh replaced quickly, and no standing water on balconies and terraces.
What our clients say
The existing nets had holes from sun damage. They replaced them with UV-resistant mesh that should last much longer.
We wanted nets that wouldn't block the view too much. They installed very fine black mesh that's almost invisible from inside. Perfect.
The nets in the guest room were torn and looked messy. They replaced them with new fiberglass mesh and the room looks fresh again.
Breeze and light with screens
A standard mesh lets the breeze and daylight through, and you still see out. Air moves less through denser fabrics, such as anti-dust or anti-midge.
A dusty mesh passes less air. Rinse it with water now and then, and always after a sandstorm.

Screens and other ways against mosquitoes
- Sprays and plug-ins kill what is already inside, but do nothing at the opening
- A bed net protects one sleeper, and only at night
- A fan helps on a terrace, as mosquitoes fly poorly in moving air
- A screen stops insects at the opening, day and night, with no chemicals
Questions and answers
Do screens stop sand flies?
A standard mesh is sized for mosquitoes, and the smallest biting flies can get through. A finer mesh stops more of them.
Why do I still get bitten with screens on?
Almost always a gap or an open door. Check the edges, the magnets and the bottom track first.
Do screens keep out dust as well?
A standard mesh stops insects, not fine dust. The anti-dust fabric, 800 AED per m², holds back much more of it, with less airflow.
How long do screens last in Abu Dhabi?
The frame carries a 5-year warranty, the mechanism and the installation 2 years each. The mesh wears first, and replacing it costs from 200 AED.
